A group of gay friends from New York spend their summer holiday weekends in the country at the beautiful lakeside estate of lovers Gregory and Bobby. They include longtime companions Arthur and Perry, the witty show queen Buzz (who has AIDS), and John, an overbearing composer who is accompanied by his handsome young lover Ramon.
With a discerning eye and ear, McNally explores the bonds and boundaries of friendships and romantic relationships which is perceptive drama no matter what sexual orientation the characters may be. But Love! Valour! Compassion! is also stirringly gay, as well, and it unceremoniously celebrates queer humor and custom. The ensemble is terrific. All but Alexander (as Buzz) starred in the Broadway production, and he effortlessly fits in giving a tender, funny portrait. Glover is exceptional as John, and, in a dual role, his twin brother James, a sweet-natured, flamboyant PWA. Becker is an attractive and often nude Ramon.
