A local gay cruising spot becomes the target of political opportunists in this sweet Canadian film about two men whose potential romance is thwarted by clumsy and comic suicide attempts.
Wilby is a postcard-perfect island community – except it’s threatened by a menace. Now, if this were America, it would be monsters or maniacs, but this is Canada, so the "menace" is actually some supposed gay cruising by the shore. Yet the paper is about to name names, and the townspeople are in an uproar – or at least the calm Canadian equivalent thereof. There’s the honest and hunky cop Buddy (Paul Gross, “Tales of the City’s” original Brian); his wife, Carol (Sideways' sublime Sandra Oh) who’s hellbent (sorry, heck-bent) on being the Donna Trump of Wilby real estate; the town’s prodigal slut, Sandra, who has her eyes on Buddy’s “pistol”; her daughter and unintended protégé, Emily; the handyman, Duck, so named because he was the smallest kid in class (but has since filled out quite nicely); and the soulful video store owner, Dan, who just wants five minutes alone to kill himself!
Everything is sorted out by the end, thanks to a grade-A ensemble cast, a nuanced script, and a touch of whimsy that’s as subtle and intoxicating as a sea breeze. Plus there’s an attempted motel room gay seduction that is so sweet and simple, and yet so sexy that Falcon Studios should take notes. Wilby Wonderful is just that!
