Psycho Beach Party






From the director of The Disco Years in the Boys Life collection comes this marvelously campy tale of shaking bikinis, gay muscled surfers, a wannabe surf babe with a split personality, a mom with an agenda, and a few severed body parts.
Captain Monica Stark (Busch) is called to investigate a recent rash of gory Malibu murders and she's got quite a mystery to solve! Psycho Beach Party is a send-up of two Hollywood genres: the beach movies of the fifties and the psychological thrillers of Alfred Hitchcock whipped-up into a frothy madcap romp. Heading the cast is writer/playwright and well known gender illusionist-performer Charles Busch. The script is chock full of witty one-liners and double entendre for the whole family! Robert Lee King's skilled direction is fun, fresh, and sassy with something for everyone. Two of these fifties surfer dudes are gay, but it's before Stonewall and they haven't quite figured out what to do! (We could show them a few tricks) It's a surfer movie with plenty of shirtless hunks, it's a fifties comedy with dozens of witty jokes with two meanings and it's even got campy gore with a few extra hands making an appearance.

Between Love & Goodbye









Casper Andreas’s (A Four Letter Word) new film, set in New York City, is the story of a fairy tale gay romance that runs off track when a troubled family member arrives on the scene.
REVIEWSometimes relationships have a “’til death do us part” ending, and sometimes it’s a bit more complicated. Casper Andreas’s (A Four Letter Word) new film is the story of two men who fall in love fast and hard and out of love even faster. For Kyle and Marcel, it’s love at first sight. Marcel is not a citizen, so they finagle him a sham marriage with their lesbian neighbor Sarah. All is secure and happy until Kyle’s troubled sister April arrives, homeless and full of drama. The brother and sister start their old band back up, and April wants rid of the boyfriend. She’s manipulative, jealous and wants her brother all to herself. In bits and pieces we learn some of April’s history. She’s a transsexual hooker with a history of mental problems and a complete lack of cash. It’s when April decides she wants to change her gender back to male that things really get crazy. Set on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Between Love & Goodbye has an authentic East Village flavor, a great score and a compellingly original story.

Kalifornia


An unnerving and at times nauseating thriller for the art-house set. Duchovny costars and narrates as a free-lance writer with a fascination for serial killers. Bereft of ideas for his book, he and his photographer girlfriend (Forbes) plan a road trip from Georgia to L.A. visiting the sites of famous murders along the way. Short on cash, they solicit a rideshare and wind up with Pitt and Lewis, the poorest white trash to hit the screen since Pink Flamingos. Put these two couples in a '60s Lincoln convertible and you've got the recipe for a nightmarish ride across the Southern heartland. Pitt redefines the term psychopath with his portrayal of a filthy, beer-guzzling, grizzle-faced parolee (for what we never learn). Director Sena creates a cinematic pastiche, straddling the line between hip atmospheric character study and pure quease-inducing terror.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine


The gruff, adamantium-clawed Marvel superhero Wolverine strikes out on his own in this X-Men spin-off starring series regular Hugh Jackman. The story gets under way as the boy who will become Wolverine makes a shocking discovery about his family bloodline, and gains a brother in the process. Flash forward to find the mutant siblings battling side by side through two world wars and Vietnam -- where they are sentenced to death for killing a commanding officer -- and Logan (Hugh Jackman) and his brother, Victor Creed (aka Sabretooth, played by Liev Schreiber), have joined a top-secret government task force. When their targets begin to include innocent civilians, conscientious Logan escapes to the Canadian Rockies, where he builds a home with pretty schoolteacher Kayla Silverfox (Lynn Collins). Informed by his old commanding officer William Stryker (Danny Huston) that the members of his old team are being targeted for death, Logan is heartbroken when Victor finds and kills Kayla. Vowing revenge, Logan agrees to take part in a dangerous experiment that will fuse his bones with a powerful metal alloy called adamantium, which makes him virtually indestructible and gives him the strength needed to defeat his powerful brother. Subsequently betrayed by Stryker, Logan (now Wolverine) sets out to find his blood-lusting brother and stop the cycle of violence once and for all. Along the way, the temperamental hero is joined by fellow mutants John Wraith (Will.i.Am) and Remy LeBeau (aka Gambit, played by Taylor Kitsch). But before Wolverine can seek vengeance against Striker and his brother, he'll have to do battle with Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) a formidable mutant instilled with many powers.

Brassed Off


In the wonderful tradition of "small" British social comedies comes this unexpected pleasure with one of the most unlikely topics for a ravishing and delectable comedy: a brass band competition. In the small Northern England mining town of Grimley, miners have proudly played in the town's brass band for over a century. But the imminent closing of the mines threatens not only the livelihood of an entire town, but the band as well. Under the direction of Postlethwaite (whose solid performance anchors the film), the band tries to persevere as the championship and an uncertain future lie ahead. Writer-director Herman has created an absolute joy -- its humor is sharp, its political observations sharper, and the film is peopled with most appealing and nicely defined characters. Tompkinson gives a brilliant portrayal of comic verve and touching desperation as Postlethwaite's devoted son.

Saturday Night at the Baths


Virtually unseen since the mid-1970’s, “Saturday Night at the Baths” is an entertaining, sexy and provocative look at the gay life style during the post Stonewall, pre-AIDS period. Set in New York City with much of it filmed on location in the famous Continental Baths, this film is a classic time capsule of an era long gone by.
At first this writer thought he was going to be treated to simply a campy trip back to the '70s but was pleasantly surprised, Saturday Night at the Baths is an entertaining nostalgic journey that belongs in every collection. Not only is there a compelling story of a man realizing that he's gay, but there is a bodybuilder's photo show with work by Bruce Weber, a stunning performance by Jane Oliver, noted chanteuse and lots of men in towels!
Our story is that of Michael and Tracy, two young artists in love. Michael is an unemployed pianist and Tracy a photographer. Michael scores a job and they celebrate by making love. But there's a hitch to the job -- it's at the famed gay Contintental Baths, where Bette Midler's career got its start. (She's never mentioned in the film.) Tracy's cool with it, so Michael accepts the job. The manager Scotti sports a huge afro and wears skin-tight bell bottoms (looking a lot like this writer did in 1974). There is immediate chemistry between the two men, but Michael thinks it's just friendship -- Scotti knows better, but he's playing his cards nice and slow. The baths are filled with characters that must be seen to be believed, we're just glad we didn't smell all the cheap cologne that must have sprayed on these men! There is a great go-go dance and a fun modern dance piece. The expected drag show is excellent with impersonations of Shirley Bassey, Diana Ross and Judy Garland. The film builds up to Michael's opening night with plenty of suspense. We know what's to happen when Michael asks Tracy to stay home...
With it's bevy of towel-clad hunks, fantastic score and compelling story, this is one little-known '70s film that needs to become known.

The transformation of a homophobic straight man into "one of the boys" is the theme of this historically important, independently made comedy-drama. Michael, who lives with a girlfriend, finds his already unstable sexuality challenged after he gets a job as a pianist at the gay Continental Baths. At first denying any male attraction, his defenses melt, especially after the baths' manager Scotti finally beds him, releasing a torrent of pent-up memories and sexual desire. It is an exploration of one man's sexuality which, while featuring amateurish acting and a stilted screenplay, is nonetheless still quite entertaining. One of the first American gay-themed films, Saturday Night at the Baths is now available in a new "Director's Cut". There are some of the old edit on sale, for a limited time only.

Wilby Wonderful





A local gay cruising spot becomes the target of political opportunists in this sweet Canadian film about two men whose potential romance is thwarted by clumsy and comic suicide attempts.




Wilby is a postcard-perfect island community – except it’s threatened by a menace. Now, if this were America, it would be monsters or maniacs, but this is Canada, so the "menace" is actually some supposed gay cruising by the shore. Yet the paper is about to name names, and the townspeople are in an uproar – or at least the calm Canadian equivalent thereof. There’s the honest and hunky cop Buddy (Paul Gross, “Tales of the City’s” original Brian); his wife, Carol (Sideways' sublime Sandra Oh) who’s hellbent (sorry, heck-bent) on being the Donna Trump of Wilby real estate; the town’s prodigal slut, Sandra, who has her eyes on Buddy’s “pistol”; her daughter and unintended protégé, Emily; the handyman, Duck, so named because he was the smallest kid in class (but has since filled out quite nicely); and the soulful video store owner, Dan, who just wants five minutes alone to kill himself!
Everything is sorted out by the end, thanks to a grade-A ensemble cast, a nuanced script, and a touch of whimsy that’s as subtle and intoxicating as a sea breeze. Plus there’s an attempted motel room gay seduction that is so sweet and simple, and yet so sexy that Falcon Studios should take notes. Wilby Wonderful is just that!

Beautiful People

Based on the memoir by Simon Doonan, creative director of Barneys New York, this absolutely wonderful BBC creation will have you in stitches asking for more. Written by Jonathan Harvey (Beautiful Thing) the min-series explores the life of Simon (Luke Ward-Wilkinson), a profoundly gay young man, his best pal Kylie (Layton Williams) and his warm, loving, and very dysfunctional family. Each episode begins as Simon is setting up a Barney's window and reminiscing about an object from his childhood. Simon and Kylie belt out show tunes as casually as most children their age imitate television commercials. Growing up in suburban Reading the boys dream of moving to London to be among the "Beautiful People".

Episode 1:
How I Got My VaseDapper Simon ponders the accoutrements of his designer life. Britain might have been changing, but the Doonan family (Mum Debbie, Dad Andy, sister Ashlene and blind lodger Aunty Hayley) remain consistently nuts.
Episode 2:
How I Got My NoseSimon knows he has good looks. People in the street tell him so. But when a one night Hunk notes Simon's broken nose, his world shatters.
Episode 3:
How I Got My BeadsSimon sports fetching black beads as he shares a bong with like-minded poncho-clad types. One toke annihilates him and he passes out. A crowd gathers over him and attempts to steal his beads.
Episode 4:
How I Got My Posh Designer pals float around Simon's apartment in awe until they clock the loo with its gaudy leopard print, glitterball and resident Posh Spice doll.
Episode 5:
How I Got My TongsSimon admires the curls on his window display dolls. He is soon telling a bald celebrity that the secret to his curls is in his "special tongs".
Episode 6:
How I Got My Globe Simon is homesick. With a beer in a bar that is about as English as Dick Van Dyke, Simon turns to the plastic London skyline of his snow-globe and thoughts of home.

He vows to return one day with an all-gay team that will grind the heteros into the dust, so he sets off to find his “dream team.” With the help of his nurse sister, Ecki scours local gay bars and eventually assembles a hilariously motley but endearing crew of misfits that includes a leather-daddy threesome, a femme Turk with Beckham fantasies, a secret straight guy in love with the sister, and a seriously cute nurse eager for some private play-time with the goalie. Ecki now has two problems – turning this bunch into a team, and facing his own fears regarding his first romance.
The final game is a delicious clash of straight machismo and gay fabulousness that will have you both laughing and cheering down to the final showdown. (German with English subtitles)

Soapdish



A terrific comic cast makes the most of this often funny spoof of soap operas. Field is the reigning Queen of the Soaps. Goldberg is her writer and longtime friend. Kline is Field's ex-beau, who returns to the airwaves after a 20-year absence to be reunited with Sally -- both on-screen and off. Downey is the inefficient producer, more worried about bedding second-string actress Moriarty than his show's quality. And Shue rounds out the cast as Field's niece who, unbeknownst to her aunt, has signed on with the show. The film's tempo is played as grand farce, and though not all of the humor works, it's a joyously loony romp.

Idol


An unemployed, openly gay actor lands the role of a lifetime in this witty comedy about the downside of fame and fortune.
We meet Kerry Mitchell, an unemployed actor, spending his days auditioning for commercials for products that one doesn't discuss on prime time, and earning money as a Carl the Talking Carrot for kids' birthday parties. Unhappy with this dismal state of affairs, Kerry Mitchell and his Manager decide they must take drastic action if he is ever to reach any semblance of success and avoid total humiliation. At the same time the star of the popular television show, Espionage, Lance Hardcastle has a tragic accident that takes his life and puts his hit show at risk.
With the Espionage producers and network looking for a quick replacement, Kerry Mitchell and his manager grab their opportunity for the big break. Using his sexuality (gay) as an advantage instead of a hindrance; push Kerry Mitchell to the front of the line for the replacement of Lance Hardcastle. Both the Producers and the Network think that using an openly gay actor to portray TV's first gay spy hero would be a daring move, unique enough to create a momentum of publicity to make the tragic accident yesterday's news.
Idol follows Kerry, plucked from obscurity, through his crazy week of preparations before being unveiled to the public as America's number one spy hero. We meet the staff—the flamboyant publicist, the controlling manager, the manipulating producers, hair and make-up people, the co-star who was passed over for the lead, and the head of the brash cable network. And we hear plenty of testimonials from fans on the street and the almost famous in and around Hollywood as to their admiration for the deceased star and their loyalty to the hit show that must go on.
With the successes of Brokeback Mountain and Capote it may seem that the American public has embraced gays in the media. But is America really ready for TV's first openly gay action hero? Or has the network taken a bigger risk than it can pull off even with a massive publicity push? More importantly, Kerry Mitchell has a secret that's going to change everyone's perception of gay and straight, and sorely test the network's ability to control the spin.
Idol is in the same vein as Christopher Guest's Best in Show and Griffin Dunne's Lisa Picard is Famous. The Idol actors improvise their way hilariously through an already absurd scenario, providing ever more fuel and wit. Idol makes the viewer laugh his or her way toward deciding whether the public has really yet left the closet. It's a 90 minute ride that hits hilariously close to home and Hollywood.

Lie with Me

Busy and studly young actor Eric Balfour ("24" and "Six Feet Under") not only does full frontal in this sexually explicit drama, he shows himself erect!
Leila (Smith) is a woman coping with the divorce of her parents by engaging in a series of sexual relationships. She eventually meets an artist named David (Balfour) at a house party an the two immediately begin a heated sexual affair. Soon, they both realize their feelings may go beyond lust and for the first time in their lives they must deal with an emotional connection that challenges their beliefs in love and commitment. Based on the novel by Tamara Faith Berger.
An elegant yet raw study of sex, love and commitment, Lie with Me is pleasing to the eye in virtually every way, from its attractive, up-and-coming stars to the beautiful (sometimes shaky) camerawork — this is one fine, fine looking film. And that is, ultimately where the films succeeds. Regrettably, this too may be the film’s greatest liability, given that it’s quite easy to get lost in the superficial beauty and lusty happenings, and neglect the underlying narrative and weighty questions posed (even if it is as much of an after thought to the filmmaker as the audience). The graphic nature of the film is established from the start, with the two leads eventually baring it all and indulging in all sorts of sexplay.
David (Eric Balfour) and Leila (Lauren Lee Smith) are two fairly awkward yet very attractive 20-somethings whose sole focus lies in the realms of sex and carnality, yet both seem incapable of expressing (or even identifying) their true feelings. They meet to some extent at a party/nightclub, where both engage in outdoor play with someone else (she with a stranger, he with his girlfriend Polly), gazing at each other from across a parking lot. David maintains eye contact with Leila as she goes at it against a brick wall.
Sometime later, after a few chance encounters, they eventually get it on at David’s apartment. It is only after the act itself that they introduce themselves properly, telling each other their names and agreeing to going out on a date (evidently in Canada they do things a little differently). We learn that each has their individual problems at home; Leila is coping with her mother leaving her pothead dad, while gallant David must tend to his ailing, pervy father.
Eventually, jealously rears its ugly head and when hard times approach, David and Leila are painfully ill-equipped to help one another — as neither one is capable of expressing themselves beyond the physical. The inclusion of husky narration from the lovely Leila adds little to the picture, other than hammering home even further her emotional clumsiness. Lie with Me is great to look at, with its good-looking, frequently naked leads and hushed, almost dreamy sex scenes. All the same, the misplaced sentimentality and a predictably sappy and sluggish ending almost ruins any satisfaction gained from this alone… Almost.

The Lost Language of Cranes


In this now-classic gay film, Philip is a young man who, after falling in love, decides to come out to his family. Adapted from a now-classic David Leavitt novel and moved to London, there’s a great twist in this one! The DVD has been mastered from the British original with all the full frontal male nudity intact.
David Leavitt's critically acclaimed novel about a troubled family's crisis with homosexuality is powerfully adapted for the screen in this drama. Phillip, a young gay man, falls in love and begins to feel the need to tell his parents about his true sexual self. The twist is that Philip's father is also gay/bisexual but keeps his yearning closeted from his wife and family. The parallel stories of these two men and the emotionally distraught wife and mother caught in-between results in an undeniably painful melodrama that is exceptionally sensitive to the issues of homosexuality, bisexuality, coming out and familial miscommunication.

Shock Treatment


While not the late night classic that The Rocky Horror Picture Show was, this nonetheless pleasing sequel is a dynamic musical-comedy that finds Brad and Janet (now played by Cliff De Young and Jessica Harper) prisoners in demented Denton, home of happiness and TV game shows.
Richard O'Brien leads the proceedings as a mentally suspect medic in this twisted satire on The American Way (greed, lust, media-manipulation and skimpy attire).
Truly underappreciated.

Watchmen


The notoriously unfilmable graphic novel gets filmed! We strongly suggest reading Alan Moore's masterpiece first, because it can be hard to follow. But man, is this a dazzling piece of glorious eye candy from Zack Snyder (300), including Dr. Manhattan's (Billy Crudup, CGI enhanced) glowing blue penis.

It's got all the hot buttons you guys love: sexy men who appear naked, a hot cop (who likes to bottom), a terrific mystery, romance and a completely compelling story.
OpenCam is the story of a heartbroken hottie named Manny (Andreau Thomas), his internet-fueled love life and the men he has slept with that are subsequently brutally murdered. After an attack on Manny and his best friend/ex Maurice (Ben Green), Manny and the investigating cop Hamilton (Amir Darvish) take more than a casual interest in each other – in a dark alley. But Manny doesn't want to hook up with the hot cop again; it seems he doesn't want anyone twice. Instead, Manny is obsessed with an Internet webcam chatroom where guys jerk off on camera and all niceties of romance are shunted to the side. Hamilton checks the site himself and finds a murder – on camera – of a guy that Manny has slept with. When another former one-nighter of Manny's is murdered, Hamilton decides to trap the killer by pretending he's Manny's boyfriend, a not unpleasant prospect for the cop with the ripped abs.
Will the cops catch the killer before he kills again? Will Manny's heart open to Hamilton, or for another guy? Produced on a shoestring and created with tons of heart and soul, OpenCam is a treat for mystery lovers.

Queer L.A. misfits bond together against homophobia in Everett Lewis's latest film.
REVIEWFrom Everett Lewis (Luster) comes this drama celebrating queer activism in the 21st century where intolerance still prevails and prejudice can be found everywhere. FAQs follows the lives of a homeless teenage run-away, a greedy pornographer, a boyish ‘butch’ lesbian and a vigilante drag queen who tracks down queer bashers and invites them to face their "Destiny". Destiny (Allan Louis) takes in India (Joe Lia) after saving him from a queer bashing and together with her other ‘rainbow child’ Lester (Minerva Vier) they live together and become a family. After “working all day to put food on the table” Destiny drags up and with her silver pistol, patrols the streets of West Hollywood protecting “her children” and “other people’s children” from the straight jocks who chase gays for fun or bash them for the rush. Against this unconventional setup but fully functioning ‘queer family’ will India find true love or forever be a ‘cute one night stand’? Will Lester find a girlfriend and shave her legs and will Destiny find herself a man. Anything can happen and in FAQs everything does happen in a very short space of time, climaxing with our queer musketeers freeing themselves from the homophobic bonds of an oppressive society.
