Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium

Just an ALL-AROUND good movie. Besides the fact that I've loved practically everything Dustin Hoffman has ever appeared in!

Mr. Magorium (Dustin Hoffman) owns and runs the most magical store in the universe, where all of the toys for sale are alive. But, when the aging shopkeeper decides to retire and sell the business to his faithful cashier (Natalie Portman), he hires an uptight accountant (Jason Bateman) to get his affairs in order.

200 American

A subtle comedy/drama about a hunky guy who hires a hustler instead of dealing with the emotions required in a relationship.
In this sprightly American indie, first-time director/writer Richard LeMay has crafted a modest, yet pleasing story of love -- both lost and gained. Conrad is an uptight SOB who rules his advertising agency and life with strict controls. His lover walked out on him for being such a control freak and his employees are always frustrated. Rather than deal with finding a new lover, or more likely, allowing true emotions to actually happen, he hires a hunky Australian call boy for sexual pleasure. Suffice it to say Conrad doesn't have to hire a prostitute for sex, he's a stud. Ian arrives at his doorstep and the whole sex for money thing seems so easy. This is until Conrad offers Ian a job at his company and things get real complicated real fast. While the subjects of 200 American are sex and romance, there are no lingering shots of male torsos here. The director is trying to get our attention towards the story and off the nudity -- which isn't here. This isn't your ordinary "gay hustler" film -- there are plot twists galore and even a budding romance.

Second Hand Lions

Not 'gay', not 'gay-themed', just another of my all-time favorite movies! DK

In this family-friendly comedy drama, Walter (Haley Joel Osment) is a shy and bookish boy just short of his teens whose mother impulsively decides to leave him for the summer with his eccentric grand-uncles, Hub (Robert Duvall) and Garth (Michael Caine). Walter isn't especially happy about being left in the middle of Texas with two old men, while Hub and Garth aren't too pleased to be stuck minding a boy, especially one who isn't accustomed to hunting, fishing, or firearms. When Walter starts hearing local gossip about his uncles' wild and wooly pasts, he begins asking a few questions, and while Hub and Garth don't enjoy having the boy poking into their pasts, as they start telling tales of their youthful adventures, they find themselves itching for some new adventures in their lives. Soon Walter is a semi-willing accomplice as his elderly guardians rediscover the wild, impulsive spirit of youth.

Red Dirt

Red Dirt is set in the small Mississippi town of Pine Apple where gorgeous Griffith (Dan Montgomery) lives with his aunt Summer (Karen Black) and cousin Emily (Aleksa Palladino). Their lives are slow and uneventful until Lee (Walter Goggins) a drifter wanders into their lives. Lee and Griffith bond very quickly forging a deep friendship. They fix up a house, swim together and run through the rain naked bonding into a relationship that lacks only sex to make it gay. A palpable homoeroticism hangs over Red Dirt like the Spanish moss on the trees. Both Griffith and Emily feel stuck in this small town taking care of their aunt who suffers from agoraphobia as a result of Griffith's mother's tragic death. Lee encourages Griffith to leave and hit the road with him, he is clearly smitten with Griffith - anybody would be! It takes Emily to reveal the homosexual attraction that Griffith at first rejects but then adapts to.
A lush film with saturated colors, gorgeous score and a real Southern feeling. The performances are all strong, especially Karen Black and Dan Montgomery. Plenty of male beauty, a great story and a trip to the rural south make this a rewarding and special film.

Theft

Liberty Hills was the most conservative village in America, till they got through with it!
Sweet, sexy and naive Guy (Matthew Burnett) never dreamed he would fall in love with an unrepentant criminal (Patrick Henderson) and their passion would ignite the fire that burns down the local evangelical church in this rambunctious and controversial satire about gay men living in small town America.
Featuring the hot disco music of Hedda Layne, a cast of hunky Leathermen, and a preacher that puts Tammy Faye to shame, Theft is a rollicking good time that will make you stand up and cheer!

The Fruit Machine: Twenty Years of Writings on Queer Cinema

The bluntly titled The Fruit Machine stars Emile Charles and Tony Forsyth as a pair of homosexual Liverpool teenagers. Though their sexual orientation may be the same, Charles and Forsyth hold diametrically opposed outlooks on life. Gradually, a romance develops between the two -- but before things progress much farther, the film suddenly switches emotional gears. Witnessing a gangland execution, Charles and Forsyth are forced to defend their lives against an onslaught of villains. The Fruit Machine seems unsure of what sort of movie it would like to be, though many of its individual components are handled with utmost confidence by director Philip Saville. The film was originally titled Wonderland.

The Education of Charlie Banks

Charlie Banks' (Jesse Eisenberg) sheltered world at his Ivy League campus is shaken up when Mick (Jason Ritter), an old acquaintance with a violent past, unexpectedly shows up at his dorm room. Intrigued by Charlie's privileged lifestyle, the charismatic Mick quickly wins over Charlie's friends and his crush, Mary (Eva Amurri) as he seamlessly integrates himself into Charlie's life.
Unnerved, yet also in awe of Mick's easy charm, Charlie's unresolved feelings of jealousy, admiration and fear – as well as an unspoken secret between the two — threatens to come to a head with ruinous consequences. Marking Fred Durst's directorial debut, this "well-done and evocative coming-of-age story" (Simi Horowitz, Back Stage) also stars Chris Marquette and Sebastian Stan.

The Business of Fancydancing

A unique and very moving film that marries poetry, dance, music and the art of cinema in one happy amalgam. In this largely improvised film actor Evan Adams plays a gay Native-American man who has left the reservation and must return home for the funeral of a friend.
REVIEW
After the success of 1998's Smoke Signals, novelist, screenwriter and poet Sherman Alexie was approached with lots of work in Hollywood. But, the fiercely independent Alexie ultimately decided to make his own film, where he could control all of the elements. Named after his 1992 poetry collection, "The Business of Fancydancing," Alexie's sumptuously shot digital video directorial debut involves the tumultuous personal journeys and reunion of several Native Americans following a childhood friends death.
Years ago, best friends Aristotle Joseph (Tagaban) and Seymour Polatkin (Adams) left their Spokane reservation homes to attend college in Seattle. Seymour, a gay writer, begins flourishing in the white man's world. But Aristotle has no such luck and rebels, growing hateful towards his friend and white society, returning to the reservation alone.
Fifteen years later, their mutual childhood friend, Mouse (Kanim), dies suddenly. Seymour is by now the de facto poet spokesman for American Indians – which neither he nor they are quite comfortable with. Seymour decides to revisit his "res," for the funeral and without his white boyfriend Steven, which greatly upsets the latter. Framed by delightfully confrontational interviews conducted by a humorously aggressive interviewer (Carroll), and remarkable music and dance sequences, The Business of Fancydancing unravels in many evocative and rewarding layers.
Each of the actors in the film was involved in the partially improvisatory writing process. A portion of their lives is in each of their characters, giving the film a very personal feel. Adding to the personal feel is the original music, all performed live in the film by the actors. Expect what you least expect in this poetic and musical transformational journey

Gods of Football 2009

Sydney-based photographer Pedro Virgil took 45 Australian professional rugby (football) players to some of that country’s most iconic and gorgeous locations and photographed them nude for "Gods of Football Calendar 2009." And a video crew followed him for every hot minute of it! >The Gods of Football VIP Pass behind the scenes DVD is 80 minutes of calendar images come to life + interviews, outtakes and extras. Enough hot Aussie footballers to make an evening of it.

3 REASONS TO DOWNLOAD THIS FILM

1.) Hot naked jocks...what's not to love?
2.) Amazing photography
3.) I'm sorry, did I neglect to mention that the calendar features naked jocks?

Die Mommie Die!

A gay camp mystery inspired by classic films written by and starring gender illusionist Charles Busch. The film features Jason Priestley and Stark Sands in a steamy sex scene.

3 REASONS TO DOWNLOAD THIS FILM
Charles Busch's '40s film satire is superb entertainment
Jason Priestley and Stark Sands in the garden shed.
It's kinda funny that this spoof of classic films is now a classic

The faded star Angela Arden is now retired from her years as a pop singer, her voice tired from decades of stage performances. This latest creation from gender illusionist Charles combines Joan Crawford and Barbara Stanwyck into one fierce woman with a heart of ice. Years ago Angela had a hit "Why Not Me?" but that was a long time ago. And then there is the mysterious death of her twin sister Barbara, forcing her retirement. Angela lives with her husband Sol Sussman (Phillip Baker Hall), a liberal Jewish movie producer, and their two twisted children Edith (Natasha Lyonne) and Lance (Stark Sands) who just got thrown out of college for starting an orgy in the male faculty lounge. Also hanging out at the palatial estate is tennis pro and gigolo Tony Parker (Jason Priestley). By the end of the movie, Tony has slept with both "children" as well as mama! And to top off this crazy family, the maid Bootise (Frances Conroy -- Ruth on "Six Feet Under") passes Christian judgment on all the goings-on. It's a crazy mixed-up world at the Arden house, one with lots of secrets and a murder on the horizon.
This spoof of thrillers, women's films and exploitation films from the 40's to the 60's works on many levels. If you are a fan of old movies, you can identify references to Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, Imitation of Life, Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte and many more such classics. If you like mysteries, this one's actually pretty good. If you love drag, you can't miss Charles Busch's latest creation. And for the rest of us, there's even a hot gay sex scene between the surprisingly funny Jason Priestley and the sweetly adorable Stark Sands. Yes, the film is a melange, but we love it!
Scott Cranin
"The fun of "Die Mommie Die!" flows out of its caricatures and camp references more than from the dialogue itself. Mr. Busch's funniest technique is to throw in raunchy, potty-mouthed zingers out of the blue to ratchet down the tone and to remind us that in the trashy Hollywood of Mr. Busch's imagination, wanton lust triggers most of the bad behavior. Greed runs a close second.
Although most of the supporting performances are carefully, shaded caricatures, "Die Mommie Die!" is really Mr. Busch's show. Within the cramped limitations of drag, he exudes a genuine screen charisma. That star quality as much as anything should earn the film a niche in camp heaven."

Wolves of Wall Street

(2002) The latest from gay horror director David DeCoteau tells the dark, evil tale of hunky, muscle-bound Wall Street stock brokers who growl and hunt meat under the full moon.

Jeff is sweet, innocent boy who desperately wants to be a stock broker. Rather than take the traditional route of becoming a sales assistant who shows moxie and enters the training program, he gets a place as a trainee at the Wolfe Brothers firm. These vicious brokers sell stocks by day and hunt flesh by night. To enter their "pack" one must show blood lust and follow the teachings of leader Dyson Keller (Eric Roberts). But his relationship with the lovely young Annie causes him to want out!
Heavy on the atmosphere, satire and luscious young men, DeCoteau brings us another horror movie we can laugh at. During the most memorable scene in the film, repeated in flashback several times, the six young muscle-stud brokers rip off their shirts and strip down to their tight black undies to growl over a pair of women. With no shots of female flesh and plenty of the guys, we know who this one's made for! If you have enjoyed DeCoteau's other films, The Brotherhood 1, 2, 3 and Voodoo Academy, this one's for you.

Tales of the City

Taken from Armistead Maupin's endearing and popular novel, this boldly original and faithful adaptation follows the interconnected lives of a group of San Francisco eccentrics (both gay and straight) during the 70s. This six-part miniseries centers around exotic Earth Mother Anna Madrigal (Dukakis), landlady of 28 Barbary Lane. Her colorful extended family of tenants includes innocent Mary Ann Singleton (Linney), a recent arrival from Cincinnati; bisexual/fag hag Mona Ramsey (Webb); the swinging single Brian Hawkins (Gross); and Michael 'Mouse' Tolliver (D'Amico), a hopeless romantic eternally searching for Mr. Right.
The lives of these people and others come together in an amazingly complex series of eye-opening episodes which involve marital infidelity, child pornographers, ribald sexuality, recreational drug use, a wet underwear contest and even a scene shot in a gay bathhouse. Tales... is funny, provocative and totally unpredictable. Cameos include Edie Adams, Lance Loud, Paul Bartel, Rod Steiger, Karen Black, Mary Kay Place and Ian McKellen.

More Tales of the City

Cast: Olympia Dukakis, Laura Linney, Colin Ferguson, Thomas Gibson, William Campbell, Swoosie Kurtz, Barbara Garrick, Jackie Burroughs, Nina Siemaszko, Paul Bartel

The stories of 28 Barbary Lane continue with more laughs, more sex and more mysteries with Armistead Maupin's More Tales of the City, a six-part miniseries (available on 3 tapes) follow-up to the highly successful Tales of the City. Picking up where the original left off, Anna Madrigal (Dukakis) is still keeping watch over her tenants Mary Ann (Linney), who finds love with the mysterious Burke (Ferguson), and Michael "Mouse" Tolliver (Hopkins, replacing Marcus D'Amico), who falls hard for the dreamy Dr. Fielding (Campbell). Meanwhile, Mona (Siemaszko replacing Chloe Webb) heads off in search of her birth mother; and Beauchamp (Gibson) deals with his wife Dede's (Garrick) impending motherhood. More Tales is just as enjoyable as the original, and since there is less time introducing the characters, there's more time spent with them and developing them. Tensions about showing nudity and depicting homosexuality, which caused a controversy with the first production, have been lessened (this was made for Showtime, not PBS as the original was), making the sequel more relaxed. As before, the series captures 1970s San Francisco in all its glory, featuring fabulous period details in the clothes, music and fads of the era. It's like reuniting with long-lost old friends.

Further Tales of the City

Cast: Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis, Barbara Garrick, Paul Hopkins, Mary Kay Place, Henry Czerny, Lea DeLaria, Parker Posey, Joel Grey, Whip Hubley, Jackie Burroughs, Bill Campbell, Bruce McCulloch

28 Barbary Lane has got a new coat of paint, and a few minor cast members have changed, but we've got another great visit with old friends in the new edition of the Tales of the City. It's the early eighties and things have been re-arranged in our favorite house; one of Anna Madrigal's (Dukakis) children has fled the coop - Mona (her biological child)- Michael (Hopkins) has ditched Jon Fielding (Campbell) so that he can play the field again (including a roll in the hay with Cage Tyler - aka Rock Hudson) - and MaryAnn (Linney) and Brian (Hubley) are now lovers. Meanwhile Dede Halcyon, (Garrick) last seen with Jim Jones in Guyana with her lover D'Orothea and their two Asian-American twins has re-appeared alive! Mrs. Halcyon enlists MaryAnn Singleton's help in making Dede's transition as peaceful as possible. Gossip columnist Prue Giroux (Place) has taken up with the mysterious Luke (Czerny) in Golden Gate Park and they decide to take a cruise to Alaska, where all hell breaks loose in traditonal Armistead Maupin style.
It's a seat grabbing adventure from beginning to end, with some excellent surprise changes from the novel. The cast is first rate, with special marks for Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis and Mary Kay Place. There are some real juicy full frontal nude shots of Michael and even the gorgeous Dr. Fielding! Like Alfred Hitchcock, creator Armistead Maupin makes a cameo appearance, we won't say where! For fans, it's an absolute neccessity, if you aren't a fan - here's your chance to partake of the some of the most addictive books and television yet concocted.

The Escort (L'Escorte)

Johan (1976)

Cast: Marie-Christine Weill, Patrice Pascal, Philippe Vallois

A novice filmmaker searches for an actor to portray his seductive and enigmatic jailed lover in this surreal and sexually explicit film from the ‘70s.

3 REASONS TO DOWNLOAD THIS FILM
Retro porn from 1976 – wow!
A true collector's item
Even the hairstyles are hot

In this bizarre meta-story from French filmmaker Philippe Valois, one never quite knows who’s who or what’s what, but that’s okay, because even if you lose the narrative thread, there’s plenty, and I mean plenty of gorgeous footage of beautiful men in various states of undress doing everything from dancing to playing cards to making sweet, humpy love to each other.
Set in Paris, the plot concerns a filmmaker trying to make a movie about his erstwhile lover, Johan, who is “the kind of man you see once and never forget.” Trouble is, none of the actors he auditions can quite get it right. For that matter, the filmmaker can’t manage to cast himself either, because two other men portray him during the course of the film.
As unhinged as the ‘70s gay scene itself, Johan paints a dizzying portrait of gay youth in all its enthralling and often narcissistic glory. We’re shown gay cruising in public gardens, awkward encounters with doting mothers, bravura dance performances and even glimpses into that strange and wonderful relationship gay men have with raucous, free-spirited straight women. All this plus forehead tattoos and bell-bottoms make Johan a wild retro trip that is sure to tease, titillate and astound the viewer. (French with English subtitles)

Between Love & Goodbye

Casper Andreas’s (A Four Letter Word) new film, set in New York City, is the story of a fairy tale gay romance that runs off track when a troubled family member arrives on the scene.
Sometimes relationships have a “’til death do us part” ending, and sometimes it’s a bit more complicated. Casper Andreas’s (A Four Letter Word) new film is the story of two men who fall in love fast and hard and out of love even faster. For Kyle and Marcel, it’s love at first sight. Marcel is not a citizen, so they finagle him a sham marriage with their lesbian neighbor Sarah. All is secure and happy until Kyle’s troubled sister April arrives, homeless and full of drama. The brother and sister start their old band back up, and April wants rid of the boyfriend. She’s manipulative, jealous and wants her brother all to herself. In bits and pieces we learn some of April’s history. She’s a transsexual hooker with a history of mental problems and a complete lack of cash. It’s when April decides she wants to change her gender back to male that things really get crazy. Set on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Between Love & Goodbye has an authentic East Village flavor, a great score and a compellingly original story.
